Windsor is one of only two figure-of-eight courses in the UK and the only one that caters for Flat racing. It used to be an advantage to be drawn near the stands rail in races over 5f & 6f but that advantage is nullified when the going is soft or heavy and, indeed, it can be a negative to be drawn low when the runners track across to the far side in the straight.
Situated alongside the River Thames, the racecourse staged its first official meeting in 1866. Nowadays, its bread and butter are the regular and popular Monday evening meetings staged throughout the summer though its big race of the year, the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes, takes place on a Saturday. Fixtures take place in general from April through to October. Talking of bread and butter, there are three restaurants in the grandstand and club enclosures and seated viewing is also available on the inside of the track (accessed by a path across the course after the finishing line).
Windsor is on the A308 which can be reached from either Junction 8/9 or Junction 6 of the M4. The nearest stations to the racecourse are Windsor and Eton Central, Windsor and Eton Riverside, and Slough but all are a taxi ride from the entrances. An alternative is to take the river taxi which operates on all racedays and takes just 10 minutes from Barry Avenue Promenade in the town centre.
The big Newmarket and Lambourn stables usually have runners at Windsor and Saeed Bin Suroor and Ralph Beckett’s charges do particularly well. Jeremy Noseda and Sir Michael Stoute’s three-year-olds are the ones to watch.
