Wetherby, located immediately adjacent to the A1(M) in West Yorkshire, was originally at nearby Scaur Bank but moved to its current site on York Road in 1891. It stages National Hunt racing from October through until May but its season revolves around two significant fixtures. The West Yorkshire Hurdle and Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase take place in early November while the Rowland Meyrick Chase and Castleford Chase take place on consecutive days at the Christmas meeting.
The Charlie Hall is the first major race of the new season for 3m chasers with Gold Cup aspirations. The fences offer a good jumping test but the left-handed course, is fairly flat and tends to suit those with winning form over shorter trips rather than out-and-out stayers. Small fields are generally the order of the day but favourites have a distinctly average record.
Situated just off the B1224, take Junction 46 from the Al(M) signposted Wetherby Services. The nearest stations are at York and Leeds. Buses run every half-hour from Leeds Bus Station to Wetherby Bus Station, which is a 25-minute walk from the racecourse entrance.
Take note of any runners that travel up from Ian Williams’ base in the Midlands. Donald McCain and Charlie Longsdon’s representatives also show a healthy profit and Philip Hobbs’ hurdlers have a good record, as do those of local handler Mick Easterby. Martin Todhunter and Tim Easterby are the trainers to follow in handicap chases while Alan Swinbank targets the bumper races.
