Set in rolling parkland on the Easton Neston estate of Lord Hesketh in Northamptonshire, Towcester is located on ancient Watling Street (better known as the A5) between Northampton and Milton Keynes and a mile outside the town of Towcester. It is six miles form Junction 15A of the M1 and 16 miles from Junction 10 of the M40. Milton Keynes and Northampton stations are both approximately 20 minutes away from the course by taxi.
Towcester has been staging organised jumps meetings since 1928 and remains the only track in the country that still offers free admission (except on Boxing Day and Easter Sunday). The undulating right-handed course has arguably the stiffest finish of all NH tracks in the UK and the complexion of a race can change dramatically from the final turn on both the hurdles and chase courses. The fences aren’t overly big but fairly stiff and a test for most.
Towcester currently has 17 fixtures a year and races from October through to May, though the going can get exceptionally heavy in the winter months.
Jonjo O’Neill’s hurdlers and chasers have a good record and Laura Young’s chasers have also paid their way lately. Kim Bailey and John Quinn, in general, are other trainers worth following and horses that have won previously on the course are always worth a second look.
