Stratford is a fairly sharp, left-handed course and one of the mainstays of summer jumping. It stages fixtures between March and October, partly to correspond with the tourist season and partly because the nearby River Avon is susceptible to flooding in the winter months. Located on the B349, just west of historic Stratford-upon-Avon on the road to Evesham, it is 15 minutes from Junction 15 of the M40 and a 20-minute walk from Stratford-upon-Avon station which has services to Birmingham Moor Street.
There are reports of racing at Shottery Meadow in 1769 but regular organised meetings didn’t take place until 1849. The Warwickshire Hunt has always had a close association with the track and the main meeting of the year, in June, still features the Horse And Hound Cup which always attracts some of the best hunter chasers from the UK and Ireland.
Stratford is a course which suits speedier national hunt types. Horses will last home here if they’ve been struggling for stamina elsewhere. The hurdles course is almost flat but the chase course has a small rise at the end of the back straight and those not travelling well at this point rarely have time to rally before the short home straight. Charlie Longsdon’s runners, Peter Bowen’s hurdlers and Nigel Twiston-Davies’ bumper horses are the ones to watch but the racing is generally quite competitive considering the prize money on offer.
