SOUTHWELL (ALL WEATHER)
The advent of all-weather racing has arguably been the making of Southwell. Its Fibresand surface varies greatly from the Polytrack at Lingfield, Kempton and Wolverhampton, however, being much more testing in nature. The track itself is left-handed, around 1m1f in circumference and with a 2f run-in and a 5f straight course. Low to middle numbers are usually best in sprints but a proven ability to handle the Fibresand is an even bigger advantage. Course specialists flourish here more than most other tracks. There is normally all-weather racing every month except June and September but the betting market can prove volatile. There have been problems with a scarcity of both punters and bookmakers in poor weather conditions.
An Arena Leisure course, Southwell is on the A617 just outside the village of Rolleston in Nottinghamshire, seven miles from Newark. Rolleston has its own railway station with services to Nottingham and Newark.
David Nicholls’ runners have a good record on the Fibresand, Jo Hughes’ three-year-olds have also come to the fore while Brian Ellison and Daniel Mark Loughnane’s older horses show a profit in the winter months.
SOUTHWELL (NATIONAL HUNT)
Jump racing fixtures have increased at Southwell over the last few years and have now reached double figures over a 12-month period. Summer jumping having been added to more traditional meetings in autumn and winter. The left-handed chase and hurdle courses aren’t as tight as the all-weather track and place a surprising emphasis on stamina, especially when the going is soft or worse. The fences are a stiff test for the inexperienced as they are quite unforgiving and falls are frequent. There are no major races staged at Southwell but some of the leading National Hunt trainers do tend to place some of their lesser lights to good effect, Nicky Henderson in particular. Kim Bailey, Tim Vaughan and Jonjo O’Neill target the chases and Oliver Sherwood and Alan Swinbank’s bumper horses enjoy plenty of success. Renee Robeson is another trainer who knows what type of horse it takes to win around here.
