The Wiltshire racecourse stages Flat racing from May to October with the highlight of its season being the August running of the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes, a one mile contest for three-year-olds an upwards. Both Richard Hannon and Andrew Balding have trained the winner of the race three times since the turn of the century and runners from both yards are always worth a second look. Saeed Bin Suroor has already had two winners in the Sovereign Stakes in recent years his Newmarket raiders have a decent record at the tracks on the whole. David Evans’ runners in lower-grade races, Andrew Balding’s two-year-olds and David Elsworth’s older horses also do well.
Salisbury has a straight one mile course and a right-handed loop for longer races. There are a few undulations but it is fairly flat in nature and a good test. Runners in contests over 1m4f and further start in the home straight and race the ‘wrong’ way onto the loop . Low numbers usually have an advantage on the straight course when the ground is riding fast, though that can be reversed when the ground is heavy.
The track is less than four miles from the centre of Salisbury, on the A3094 at Netherhampton. It is signposted from both the A30 and A360. A free bus service operates from Salisbury station on racedays.
