Located between Haywards Heath and Lewes in East Sussex, Plumpton racecourse is just off the B2116 four miles from Ditchling. It is only a three-minute walk from Plumpton Station to the main entrance and trains run regularly on racedays to London Victoria and Hastings.
Plumpton staged its first meeting under Rules in 1884 and now stages jump racing for nine months of the year, the course being allowed to recuperate in June, July and August. It is a tight, left-handed course approximately a mile in circumference and fairly undulating. There is an uphill finish on both the chase and hurdles tracks and the fences can be quite tricky. Previous course winners are always worth noting.
The Sussex National in January is Plumpton’s big race of the year but it has been a graveyard for French-bred chasers down the years and many of them have been strongly fancied. The standard of this staying contest has improved recently but it is still best to look at up-and-coming sorts who are carrying 11st or less as the trip takes some getting and the ground is invariably soft or worse at the turn of the year.
Evan Williams and stable jockey Paul Moloney are a potent partnership at Plumpton and Evan’s namesake Venetia also does well with her chasers. There is profit to be had from Peter Bowen’s runners and Charlie Mann’s chasers as well, while Gary Moore and Nick Gifford’s rare runners in bumpers are worth a second look.
