Racing at Nottingham was moved to Colwick Park in 1773. Near the River Trent and just over a mile from the city centre on the B686, the course once staged both Flat and National Hunt fixtures but the jumps track was dismantled in the mid-1990s. It can be easily reached from the A52 or A60 and is close to both the M1 and A1. The city’s station is a 15-minute walk.
A left-handed and flat, galloping track, Nottingham has 21 fixtures from spring to autumn and the course generally suits big-striding types. Several leading trainers will give their well-regarded two-year-olds a run here to educate them. A separate chute accommodates sprint races up to 6f but the effect of the draw seems to vary as to conditions. On fast ground, high numbers do best in the sprint races but the advantage can be reversed on heavy going.
The Listed Further Flight Stakes, staged over 1m6f in April, is Nottingham’s most prestigious contest and it usually attracts a decent field of stayers, though is often used as a prep race for more valuable races later in the season. The classy Opinion Poll did win it in 2010, however, before winning the Goodwood Cup the following year.
Richard Hannon has done particularly well here in recent seasons and both his two and three-year-olds are worth following when attracting market support. Roger Varian’s three-year-olds also have a good strike-rate and Roy Bowring’s older horses win their fair share of low-grade handicaps.
