Situated within easy driving distance of both the M1 and A1, Market Rasen is alongside the A631 and just 10 minutes walk from the town’s railway station. The only course in Lincolnshire, it stages national hunt racing all year round with the highlight of its summer calendar being the Summer Plate, a 2m6f chase run in late July. Always give Welsh trainer Peter Bowen’s runners a second look in this – he has trained the winner four times in the last few years though he often has multiple entries. The Listed Summer Hurdle, run over 2m2f, is run on the same day and usually attracts a competitive high-class field for the time of year, while one of the principal races in the winter is the Lincolnshire Grand National, staged over 3m5f on Boxing Day.
The oval track, right-handed and approximately a mile and a quarter in circumference, provides excellent all-round viewing and is relatively flat with sharp bends going away from the stands and on the turn for home, particularly on the hurdles course. The third-last and final fences can catch out chasers who have burned up too much energy or lack experience and it can also seem a long way from the final obstacle to the winning line, so do not count winnings until your fancy has passed the post.
Dianne Sayers and Ian Williams’ hurdlers have a decent strike-rate, while Jonjo O’Neill, Sarah Humphrey, Nigel Twiston-Davies and Lucinda Russell all do well with their chasers.
