There has been a record of racing at Ludlow since 1729 but it is believed soldiers from nearby Ludlow Castle used to race their horses on the site back in the 14th century.
There is no longer any Flat racing in the heart of the Shropshire countryside, close to the Welsh border, but part of the original Flat course has been incorporated in the right-handed hurdles course, which is largely separate from the chase course. The stands and betting ring are opposite the parade ring and weighing room, which are on the inside of the course which is run by the Ludlow Race Club. Racing is staged from October to May.
The track is quite sharp and generally suits those who are athletic and like to be handy. Not many come from off the pace from the final turn. Jim Best, Charlie Mann and Paul Webber’s hurdlers seem to do well but, generally speaking, Jonjo O’Neill, Keith Goldsworthy and Neil Mulholland’s runners are the ones to include in wagers.
The course is two miles north of Ludlow town centre, just off the A49 Hereford to Shrewsbury road between the villages of Stanton Lacy and Bromfield. There is a free bus service on race days operating from Ludlow Station, which is two miles away.
