FLAT

Ffos Las is Britain’s newest racecourse and has re-introduced racing back to West Wales for the first time since before the Second World War.  Opened in 2010 and built on the site of a former open-cast mine, close to the village of Trimsaran, between the towns Llanelli and Carmarthen, it is only 15 minutes from junction 48 of the M4 (just off the B4308) and within easy reach of the Irish Ferry terminals at Pembroke and Fishguard. There are railway stations at Kidwelly, Pembrey and Burry Port and Llanelli within six miles. A free bus service operates from the latter on most race days, and as far as Swansea, and the 197 bus service between Llanelli and Carmarthen passes close to the entrance.

Surrounded by rolling hills and just a stone’s throw from Carmarthen Bay, racing at Ffos Las is quickly becoming a popular day out for locals as there is superb all-round viewing and trainers, including many from Ireland, have been quick to take advantage of the course’s excellent drainage, though the area gets plenty of rain and conditions are normally on the slow side of good during the spring, autumn and winter.

Left handed, the course is galloping in nature and almost completely level. Flat racing takes place currently between April and September. Peter Makin’s older horses have already established a decent record and early indications suggest Hughie Morrison and Brian Meehan’s three-year-olds will continue to be targeted at some of the better maidens and handicaps.

NATIONAL HUNT

Trends will take a while to establish and the course is still forging its reputation but the Welsh Champion Hurdle has already been moved to Ffos Las and other valuable contests will arrive as sponsors begin to realise the Welsh track’s potential. Nicky Henderson and Jonjo O’Neill already have and all of their runners warrant very close inspection. The chase course is fairly straightforward but it needs an accurate judge of pace and Paul Moloney seems to have nailed it quicker than most.
