Perched on top of Haldon Hill, Exeter is five miles beyond the end of the southbound M5 on the A38 to Plymouth. The track is well signposted. A free bus service operates on racedays from Exeter Bus Station and Exeter St David’s Railway Station.
There is national hunt racing at Exeter between October and May with the Jockey Club course’s feature event, the Haldon Gold Cup, staged in November. This is very much a race for the up-and-coming chaser as top novices from the previous season usually get plenty of weight from more established chasers. It is a race that Paul Nicholls has targeted in the past, though Philip Hobbs also aims his big guns at this nice prize and it is usually safe to disregard anything with a chase rating of less than 150. Azertyuiop, Best Mate and Edredon Blue are all past winners but do not be in a rush to take a short price about a favourite. While nothing bigger than a 10/1 has won in this century, no odds-on shot has been successful either in what is usually a small field.
Evan Williams’ hurdlers and Paul Nicholls and Alan King’s chasers are all worthy of blanket support on this right-handed, undulating circuit which is very stiff in nature, particularly when the ground is riding soft in the depths of winter. On a more selective scale, Victor Dartnall, Nigel Twiston-Davies, Kim Bailey and Emma Lavelle’s runners have a decent strike rate and are likely to offer better value.
